Reception – Science

This week in Reception, we had a very special delivery! Children were excited to learn that our butterfly garden kit had arrived!
The children looked through the equipment and listened carefully to instructions on how to look after some baby caterpillars. They were very gentle and eagerly learnt all about the life cycle of a butterfly. We discussed what they might eat and read some of our favourite stories that feature them, such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle & Tadpole’s Promise by Jeanne Willis. Stay tuned to see how some of our favourite little creatures develop!

Year 1 – Science/Art

The next day, we looked at Mary Anning’s fossil discovery – the Plesiosaur skeleton – and used straw to make the bones and shape of this discovery. Finally, we uncovered fossils and carefully brushed the sand away, just like Mary had to do! #MaryAnning

Year 4 – Science

Year 4 have been exploring magnets in Science. They used bar magnets to test whether objects were magnetic or non-magnetic.

Year 1 – Science

The children in Year 1 have been busy exploring plants, including trees. We went outside to identify the parts of a tree then made a model of a tree. #Science

Reception – Science

This week, the children in Reception took advantage of the lovely weather and had a visit to our Wildlife Garden. Look at what we found – bird eggs! These were nestled in a very safe place and we made sure we did not disturb the nest around it. We also looked at all the things that have started to grow.

Year 3 – Science/Geography

On Thursday, Willow class went on a trip to York Chocolate Story and had the best time. We learnt a lot about the history of chocolate production and how chocolate is made from a cocoa pod into a chocolate bar. We learnt about how it can be changed from a solid to a liquid and back to a solid again. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed making chocolate lollies and especially getting to eat lots of it!

Year 4 – Science

Year 4 have been experimenting with ice for Science Week, as part of the unit ‘Frozen in time’. We looked at why salt was the best de-icer on a wintery day. We observed what will happen to ice when we changed the variables of the experiment.  We ensured that we did a fair test during each experiment.

Year 3 – Science

To end Science week, Ash class investigated displacement. We dropped plasticine into the water and timed it until it sank. Each time we flattened it to see if it sank slower or floated. #ScienceWeek #Dimensions

Year 2 – Science

This week, in Science, Year 2 have been learning all about sound! Children have been thinking about all the different sounds they can hear around school.

Year 3 – Science

This week, Ash class explored floating and sinking in science. We gathered different items and predicted if they would float or sink. Then, we conducted the experiment and wrote up our conclusions. #ScienceWeek #Dimensions
